Kauai Day 3

We had a hike reserved for early Friday morning in Ha'ena State Park.

It was raining when we got there, but luckily it stopped by the time we started on the trail.
This is the same hike that we reserved last time we came, the Kalalau Trail. The one where I went up on my own in the evening, and we ended up giving a lot of people rides out of the park.
Paul and the kids realized how treacherous the trail was for Jack to try to do while completely malnourished, dehydrated, and in the dark. We all hope Jack and Ryder are doing well!
We thought these pink flowering trees were pretty.
This was the lookout spot that I got to last time. Rockwell stayed with us until this spot so we could get a picture with all five of us. It's so gorgeous looking out along the Napali Coast!
After that, Rockwell took off and ran the rest of the way to the river crossing. There was another beautiful picture spot later on, but Rockwell was long gone, so the four of us stopped for pictures there.
The towering green mountains next to the blue ocean is just breathtakingly beautiful!
After about two miles, we could see Hanakapi'ai Beach.
There's a river crossing right before the beach. If there's a lot of rain, the river can be dangerous to cross, so I asked Rockwell to wait to cross it until we were there. We spotted him through the trees, chilling on a rock waiting for us.
The river wasn't deep or flowing swiftly at all, so we crossed over without any trouble.
But first Rockwell wanted some pictures taken on the river. Such a cool picture!!
We had some snacks and watched the waves for a while.
Hanakapi'ai Beach is a dangerous one with huge waves and strong riptides. Swimming isn't allowed, so we just enjoyed the beauty before heading back out.
I love hiking through jungles!!!
We got so hot and sweaty on the hike back! It felt so good to jump right into the water at Ke'e Beach! Thank goodness for an amazing beach right at the trailhead!!
We had a couple hours left on our permit so we enjoyed Ke'e Beach until it was time for us to leave the park.
I thought these roots were so interesting.
Rockwell was a little tired from getting up early and then running the trail. :)
We stopped in Hanalei for some JoJo's Shave Ice. There was a Doyle surfboard right next to the line. We have stood in that line countless times and have never seen a surfboard with Doyle on it. We had to get a picture of Damon Doyle with it!
We got our shave ice and went around the corner to a table in the shade. Right as we sat down, a girl wearing a Hawkins shirt sat down across from us. It felt like a litte "Hello" from my grandpa to see Doyle and then Hawkins within two minutes. :)
We walked through the shops and then spent the rest of the afternoon at Hanalei Bay. Tessa and Damon had a blast on the boogie boards!
Rockwell was sitting on the beach with Paul and me, and he noticed that his ankle was really swollen. When we met up with Rockwell after the hike, he said that he had tripped on a rock or a root and thought he had rolled his ankle. But he kept running on it and said it felt fine, and he was so grateful that it wasn't twisted or broken or anything. After that, he and I walked back to our car and picked up a few things for the beach, we swam and played in the sand at Ke'e Beach, walked around shops, and spent hours at Hanalei Bay too. His ankle felt fine that whole time, and then suddenly it swelled up and started to hurt. I think he definitely sprained it, and it was swollen and painful the rest of the trip. That meant we weren't able to hike back down to Queen's Bath or do any more runs, and I also didn't feel comfortable with him hiking down to Hideaways Beach. It was a bummer for sure!
That night Tessa caught a cute little green lizard in the shower. :)

  1. Those pictures on the hike are amazing. I think that is the prettiest view I've ever seen.
