Kauai Day 4

We always have a lot of bird visitors on our lanai.

Damon particularly loved this cardinal.
He loved when his feathers would spike up on top of his head. :)
I saw 3 different rainbows on my run Wednesday morning. The first one was on the golf course.
I ran down to the beach at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay. There was a super vibrant rainbow out over the ocean. It was gorgeous!
And then there was a rainbow over the ocean up on Pepelani Loop too. It was a really rainy visit this year, but all that rain sure makes it beautiful!!
When we were renting our chairs and boogie boards the first morning, the guy working was super nice. He had brought in some fruit from his yard and offered a bunch to us. We got avacados, grapefruit, a papaya, and a soursop. We had never even heard of soursop, but were excited to try something new. Turns out, soursop is pretty gross. Haha. We all agreed it was not something we'll ever want again. :)
We went to Lumahai Beach for the day. We started out swimming in the river.
Paul, Tessa and Damon went to the other side of the river and checked out the black rock and little tide pools.
The waves at Lumahai are absolutely enormous, so we've never swam in the ocean there. Rockwell really wanted to play in the big waves though, and he's strong enough now to get in some of the way (not all of the way, they're seriously huge!) I went over there with him and just watched him thoroughly enjoy himself.
I have so many pictures, but I love every single one. There was pure joy on Rockwell's face for hours. He would try to withstand the waves and crash his body into them as they were crashing. He said it was a really good workout, and also the most fun he's ever had in the ocean.
A few of the waves got the best of him and he would come washing onto shore, laughing his head off.
Tessa came over after a while and watched with me. We had our legs in the water, but didn't go out very far.
I love to get Tessa's jumping picture every year. This is a great one!
We played some games on the lanai before dinner.
Then we headed into Hanalei to get some food and shave ice, of course. :)
As we were driving past the park at the end of Pepelani Loop, I saw Bethany Hamilton playing soccer with her son and some other moms. We drove around the other side of park and pulled into the library parking lot to get a picture of her. It felt very creepy and stalker-ish. Haha. If you look closely, she's in the blue shirt just to the right of the tree trunk.
Paul and Rockwell tried Hanalei Poke for dinner, and said it was delicious!
Paul was scrolling Instagram later that night, and saw himself on a page he follows called KauaiKevin. Kevin was at Lumahai at the same time as us and took a video where you can see Paul, Tessa, and Damon on the black rock. Paul messaged Kevin and told him he loves his account and how fun it was to see himself in his video. Kevin responded and thought that was awesome.

Kauai Day 3

We took surfing lessons at Hanalei Bay Tuesday morning. Paul wasn't interested in surfing, he said he would be the photographer. :)

It was the perfect day for surfing!
Our instructor, Ari, met us on the beach with our boards and taught us the form and techniques.
Then we headed out to the waves!
The waves were great that day, they kept coming one right after another. They were strong enough to go all the way to shore, but not huge. They were perfect learning waves.
We were each able to ride a bunch of waves!
It was a blast! By the end of the lesson we were all paddling and catching the waves on our own. Ari challenged us to switch our feet mid-wave for something fun and new to try after we had the hang of it. The kids had fun with that.
We worked up an appetite! We went to Chicken in a Barrel again. So yummy!
That evening we walked over to Turtle Cave at low tide. I find it sad that they have to make signs that say 'Please never ride the turtles'.
It was a short hike down the cliffside.
It was very steep though. Gratefully, there were ropes to hold on to in some parts.
I still managed to fall though. It was a hard one too. I hurt my shoulder pretty good, as well as my pride. :)
It was sure pretty when we got to the cave though!
We left our shoes on the rocks and walked into the cave.
We walked all the way through the cave out to the opening on the other side, but sadly there weren't any turtles.
It was such a pretty area, so we stayed and enjoyed the beauty for a while.
Tessa had some fun poses for her photo shoot. Haha!
It was fun to explore a new place. We'll have to go back again next trip and hopefully see some turtles in the cave. :)
