Alpine Days

Rockwell was so excited for Alpine Days this year. He was really looking forward to running the 400m and seeing how he measured up to the best of the best in the district. Sadly, the weather was absolutely miserable both days and made it very difficult to PR on anything. It was freezing, snowing, raining, and windy, and I felt bad for the athletes trying to run their fastest in those conditions. It was a hard pill to swallow that the weather was so bad and he couldn't reach the goals he had set for himself. It was hard to watch him feel so disappointed and frustrated.

Rockwell's first event was the 400m. The track was wet and he slipped as soon as the gun shot, which was a terrible way to start, especially on such a short race. He finished in 59.83, and was very very disappointed. It's still a great time (in my opinion), but he was so frustrated to do worse than his PR on this race especially. That put him in 9th place for the district.

The very next race was the 1600m. It was hard for Rockwell mentally to go right into another race. But he did better in this one with his body being a little more warmed up at least. He finished in 5.21.51, which was 17th in the district. Again, worse than his PR, but he handled this one better. He beat Levi in the mile for the first time ever. Levi, Grant, and Rockwell have encouraged and pushed each other all season long. They, along with some 8th grade girls, will do extra mileage at practices and really push themselves to improve. Rockwell is faster in the shorter races, but Grant and Levi do better with longer distances. He's wanted to beat Levi in the mile for 2 years now, and it finally happened, so he was happy about that.
He also had the 200m that day. It was the trials to see the top 8 finishers who would compete in the finals the next day. He didn't qualify for that, which was expected, so that one didn't bother him. He ran it in 26.18, which was 15th place.
The only race he had the second day was the 4x400m relay. Their team finished 4th in the district with a time of 4.11.92.
Rock ran his lap in 59.08 and he was happy with that.
Well done boys!
